Your car\u2019s oil filter removes dirt and contaminants from the engine oil, preventing particles from reaching the vehicle\u2019s engine to prevent damage to it.\u00a0Don\u2019t wait for the oil light to come on;\u00a0staying on a routine maintenance schedule will keep your vehicle running smoothly for years.<\/p>

Your vehicle manual will recommend how often to change the oil filter.\u00a0Your driving habits have an impact on when you should change your oil filter.\u00a0If you take a lot of short trips or drive around town, you may need to change your oil filter more often than someone who drives mostly on freeways.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Start by preparing your car.\u00a0Park your car on a level surface and set the parking brake.\u00a0Place a block between the tires and the ground to ensure that the vehicle does not move.\u00a0Be aware that engine oil can reach high temperatures, so allow enough time for the engine oil to cool.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now that you have found the oil filter, you must decide how to reach it.\u00a0You may be able to reach it from the top, but on some vehicles the only way to reach it is from below.\u00a0If you don\u2019t have enough clearance, you will need a ramp to lift the vehicle.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

It is time to remove the old oil filter.\u00a0Place a container under where you will remove it.\u00a0If you want to keep your hands clean, wear latex gloves.\u00a0Clean the filter with a cloth;\u00a0this will prevent it from becoming slippery.\u00a0Unscrew the filter with an oil filter wrench.\u00a0As you unscrew the filter, be sure not to let the oil spill.\u00a0Put the old filter in a plastic bag and tie it up.\u00a0Set it aside for recycling.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Now it is time to install the new oil filter. At one end of the filter, there is a large hole: take a liter of oil and pour oil until it is three-quarters of the way full. Around the hole is a rubber O-ring; Smear oil on the ring with your finger.<\/p>

Place the new oil filter in the same place where you removed the old filter.\u00a0Gently tighten by hand until it is positioned correctly and then turn it an additional quarter or half turn.\u00a0That\u2019s it!\u00a0You have successfully changed the oil filter.<\/p>
